At Boothapandi in the district of Kanyakumari, there broke a major pond all of a sudden resulting sub merging of 10 acres of land with crops. In Kanyakumari district, due to monsoon rains, the major Ponds meant for cultivation is filled with a heavy flow of water. In Kanyakumari district, there exist 2,123 major ponds. Among them, 1,105 ponds have reached their full capacities and 538 ponds have attained 75% of their capacities. The remaining 380 ponds are filled with 40% of their capacities.
In the meanwhile most of the rivers are overflowing and that results continuous supply of water in the adjacent ponds. “Some of the ponds have already reached the stage of break”, reported the officials of Public works department.
In this situation, Chaankulam Pond located at Varakunamangalam of Boothapandi, in Kanyakumari district got rupture at its southern bank, resulting heavy flow of water in the adjacent cultivated lands. In addition to these, the Eesanthimangalam Panchayat office also has been marooned in water. Apart from these above, several adjacent areas are also damaged by water. Collector Sagan Singh Chavan, the Thovali Thasildhar, Mr. Sindhu, and the officials from the public work department have already visited the spot.
