About Tuticorin


It is one of the states of TamilNadu in the republic of India that lies in the coromondel cost of Bay of Bengal. The City, often nicknamed as the “Pearl City” is famous for the operation of pearl fishing. In those days, it was ruled by different regimes such as, the early Pandayas, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Later Pandayas, Tirunelveli Sultanates, Vijayanagar Emperors, Madurai Nayakas, Chanda Sahib, Carnatic Kingdoms, Portuguese, Dutch and the British.

Tirunelveli and V. O. Chidambranar :

V. O. C., one of the greatest freedom strugglers of India who led the Swadeshi movement in the South, founded the first Swadeshi stream navigation company in this city during the year 1907, got the privilege of being born in this city Tuticorin.

City of Industries:

Tuticorin Fishing Harbor, Tuticorin Thermal Power Station, Sterlite Industries, Southern Petro Chemical Industries Corporation, Tuticorin Alkali Chemical Limited, Heavy water Board Plant, Madura court and Mills, V. V. D. Coconut Oil Mill, AVM Oil Mill, signify the industrial growth of this city. It remains the head quarter of Tamilnadu Mercantile Band Ltd., one of the leading banks of India and acknowledges the well functioning of a Marine Research Institute formed by the Central Marine Fisheries research Institute.


The city experiences tropical climate with a hot summer and a mild winter and an average rate of rain fall and the annual temperature varies between 36 degree centigrade to 28 degree centigrade. It experiences the coolest weather during the month of December and January and the warmest weather during the month of May and June. Summers are hot and humid.


In Tuticorin, there are 31 Schools, 5 Arts and Science colleges, 3 Poly technical colleges, 1 fisheries college, 1 Government engineering College and a Medical college apart from several Private engineering Colleges that lie Near Tiruchendur –Palliayam Kottai road with high literary rate.


Occupation: Many are engaged in salt-pans, fishing, and fishery trading while a few engaged in Tourism. A vast number of other technically and academically qualified people serve in other various organizations.


It is well connected with other cities of Tamil Nadu and India by means of Road, Rail, Air, and Water. The city is connected with the other major Cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari by means of regular bus services. Railways link Tuticorin city with other cities such as Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore, Pune, Ahamadabad etc.


Space jet launches flight service to Chennai twice a day from Vagikulam and the Madurai International air port is the nearest one from here.

Ferry Service:

V.O. Chidambaram Port operates a ferry line service to Colombo of SriLanka regularly.

Important Tourist Spots in Tuticorin include, Kalugu Malai, which is famous for its ancient rock-cut Jain Cave Temple, Ottapidaram, the birth place of our famous freedom fighter V.O Chidambaranar, Manapad, one of the religious places which has been famous for its Holly Cross Church, Tuticorin Port, the Kattabomman Memorial Port, Kalakadu Wild Life Sactuary, Mundanthurai Wild Life Sanctuary, the Bassila of a Laddy of Snow, the ancient Church constructed in the year 1582 A.D with the holy statue of virgin Mary, Ettaiyapuram Palace, Panchalankurichi, the birth place of Veerpandya Katta Bomman, Sri Vaikundam Temple and PANIMATHA CHURCH.
